Progress

Had a tutorial today which has helped me to expand my thinking a bit as I've recently been finding idea generation quite difficult. If there was a phrase for the artists equivalent to 'writers block' it would be my middle name..! Maybe that's a little over the top, however I do think it's important to understand that it's not always possible to produce work that you like. My aim in future is attempt to feed my imagination and fuel inspiration by doing something simple such as going for a walk, listening to a record or just drawing aimlessly with no direction. I often find that churning some drawings out, as terrible as some may be, often ends with a eureka moment. And from there everything else seems to flow again.

Talking over my ideas with Amy & Theresa also helped greatly with getting the ball rolling. From the motifs I had produced during Studio Brief 1, I feel that my strongest ideas so far are the ones that incorporate the literal theme of the brain (included in the line quality of the image) and eyes that give off more abstract ideas, with connotations of hallucinations and other worldly feels. The main points that I've taken note of from this tutorial are:

  • Work/ideas going well so far. Need to work on adding a sense of depth & meaning. This could be done through overlaying ideas. Experiment with colour combinations & potentially creating weird effects.
  • Need to experiment more with the digital overlay of the eyes. How could this be made most effective? Would a combination of both digital & traditional processes be a good route?
  • Looking at optical illusions could be interesting. Adding a further sense of depth to the prints.
  • Jan Lenica - Polish Graphic Designer to look at.

My aim for the next week is to begin experimentation with printing asap. I want to develop my ideas digitally before taking onto screen, whereas with lino/mono I aim to experiment more traditionally. It will be interesting to see how each process translates my ideas.

Final Reflective Report

The extended project has allowed me to investigate a range of concepts and practical processes that are fundamental to my practice. I feel...
