Colour !!!

"Let colour work as the rhythm to its story"

For this brief, the application of colour is something that needs to be really well considered; with a lot of forward planning. Something that makes this a bit of a challenge is that the story documents and explores a variety of cultures/places. The problem with this is that colours are subjective and this is especially true for people of different cultures. For example, in Western culture, green may be interpreted as a sign of luck, wealth, nature or environmental awareness; whereas in the East it's more often viewed as a signifier of youth, fertility or new life - but is also associated with infidelity!

It's these differences in the ways that we relate to and understand colour that are important to consider throughout the design of this book. With inclusivity and diversity being two key themes in the proposal for this project, it is vital to be as inclusive and representative as possible when applying colour. A way that this could be worked around is through finding similarities in the interpretations of colour between cultures, rather than their differences (fitting with the theme of the story!). Although this may prove difficult at times. Possibly using a particular colour pallet for each scene to fit with that of the country being explored in the text. The only thing about this is that it might be hard to retain the rhythmic quality of colour use that I'm hoping to achieve throughout the story. Which could be prevented by being very sparing with the application of those colours that are representative of a certain place/culture.

Definitely undertake some real research into colour theory (on a global scale!)!!!

Final Reflective Report

The extended project has allowed me to investigate a range of concepts and practical processes that are fundamental to my practice. I feel...
