Drawing from Observation

The last part of this modules playbook sessions had us doing observational drawing. In the studio session we drew from life with numerous restraints such as time and medium. This forced me to work in ways I hadn't previously when drawing from life. I found the drawings I produced under quite a large time constraint to be particularly interesting. As I couldn't allow myself much time, if any to really consider line and shape. It was like drawing with the eyes closed; you really had to absorb the subject and translate that onto paper as quickly as possible.

Practising more with these time constraints will hopefully help me to judge form and shape better, and faster. I was often frustrated at the lack of time as consequently that meant a lack of detail/attention, two things I would normally consider.

The drawings where we were given a greater amount of time where also challenging in their own way. I haven't done any life drawing like we did in this session since A-Level... So this was really a process of me getting back to grips with it all. I've realised that I definitely owe it to myself to spend some time each week drawing from life in order to reacquaint myself.

The takeaway task asked us to produce a further set of drawings from observation, here are a couple of the ones I produced:

I'm not insanely happy with either of these drawings, I think there's still a lot of practice needed for me. Maybe exploring new media for drawing that I don't often use would be fun.

Final Reflective Report

The extended project has allowed me to investigate a range of concepts and practical processes that are fundamental to my practice. I feel...
