404 has been a really enjoyable module that’s presented me
with new ways of working and thinking that have positively impacted my
practice. I think that I engaged best with this module during the Futurology
brief. I really got into working on Photoshop and found myself producing things
that where new and exciting for me, this was motivating. The Playbook sessions
we did on composition where extremely useful. It was something I was aware of but
never consciously incorporated into my work. I also learned a lot from the
GIF/InDesign workshops we had. Learning to use the Photoshop timeline acted as
a platform from which I gained a much greater interest in digital methods of
production. I found making GIF’s a really satisfying process and the end
results where a lot of fun. Another area of interest I explored in this module
was working alongside music. I’m really passionate about music and believe that
using it to inform my work was rewarding. In future modules (/independent work)
I think it’d be beneficial for me to explore its relationship with visual art
further. In Tell an Untold Story for example, I found myself particularly
engaged and energetic in regard to what I was making.
The higher amount of creative freedom this module allowed for
gave me a chance to better my understanding of the methods of production I am
interested in most. I want to incorporate aspects of both 404 & 403 into my
practice as I love the way having a creative constraint impacts one’s
generation of ideas. However, I also found myself really enjoying the freedom
that 404 presented. I find letting my imagination go to be great but attacking
a focused set brief is also something that I want to continue to do and improve
at.
The approach to working that I have used most in this module
is digital methods and collage. I’ve found that I am able to generate a vast
number of ideas in a relatively short space of time. This keeps me interested
and means I’m able to spend a lot of time refining them into finalised pieces.
I’ve also found that working digitally presents so much freedom as the sky is
the limit really. I want to dedicate time to improve my use of the Wacom pads,
I’m fond of the images they’re capable of producing. I think in future I need
to dedicate a lot more time to my practice in general, also, with more
attention paid to the process of planning and formulating an idea, I think my
work would see a really big improvement. This area has been lacking from me and
I am going to pay more attention and time toward my work in general for the
next module. I also need to begin my own projects, outside of university, this
will help me understand more in terms of what my future practice could hold and
what motivates me most.
